If you’re an oyster lover you probably noticed that this month has the tell-tale “R” in it, meaning that these delicacies are at their best — “salty, firm and flavorful,” as shreveporttimes.com points out. But what’s the use of celebrating with a dozen on the half-shell if you don’t have a refreshing Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay to go with it? So I naturally turned to the effervescent Gary Vaynerchuk of Wine Library TV for some suggestions.
Watch Gary “bring the thunder” as he decants on these three Chileans — two whites and a red, under $15: a 2006 Vino Casablanca Nimbus Estate Sauvignon Blanc, “absolutely fantastic … steal city”; a 2005 Santa Carolina Reserva Chardonnay, “very clean … very exotic (and) absolutely bringing the thunder”; and a 2005 Cousino Macul Antiguas Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, good body and sweetness but disappointing.
Bonus: You’ll even get some insights into the “nuking” technique many sommeliers employ.
(Full disclosure: I’m currently sipping a nice dry, citrus-laden Les Jamelles Sauvignon Blanc 2006 in anticipation of an oyster lunch later this week with a friend headed to Nepal on a teaching stint and what I will bet him are few prospects of finding very tempting oysters in Katmandu.) Anyway, this is about Gary, so watch the video …
A great way to learn about wines is to watch an expert taste, rate and describe them. Selections are picked because the topic is timely or seems particularly interesting. Each week a new clip, via Viddler, WNR’s player of choice because it lets you add your own comments.
