The typically irrepressible Gary Vaynerchuk again becomes even more irrepressible than usual, this time in a special Thanksgiving session of Wine Library TV, raving over one of the four Zinfandel selections he reviews.

He literally orders his “Vayniacs” (followers like vinthekid) to “find this wine.” Two of the wines didn’t fare nearly as well, though — so we also know what to avoid.

Why review Zins for this holiday? For one thing, Gary noted, they’re “fruit bombs” that nicely complement the dryness of turkey meat. And, of course, they are also “fun.”

First up was a 2004 Teira Sonoma Zinfandel ($12), with produced some nice chocolate-covered strawberry tones and came across “juicy, fruity.” But it failed to make a hit as a Thanksgiving choice: “More of a pizza wine.”

The 2006 Joel Gott Zinfandel ($13) was a surprise. A highly popular wine, it failed to deliver in this taste test, despite it’s blueberry components and “nice firm tannins.” Reason: “Really scary” alcohol level, like grape juice with a “shot of Smirnoff.” A pass.

The 2003 Green And Red Tip Top Zinfandel ($24) came off with a somewhat exotic black licorice aroma and and good fruit flavors but “lacked the charisma” to justify the price. Another pass.

Last but certainly not least: 2005 Frank Family Zinfandel ($28), which brought the raves — as in, “stellar … awesome … pure.” One of the most delicious Zins Gary’s ever tasted. “Find this wine!”

A great way to learn about wines is to watch an expert taste, rate and describe them. Selections are picked because the topic is timely or seems particularly interesting. Each week a new clip, via Viddler, WNR’s player of choice because it lets you add your own comments.
