A big plug for South African wines from Gary Vaynerchuk of Wine Library TV — “up-and-coming … exciting” wines that dollar for dollar “probably outperform” every other area of the world. First taste is a 2005 Peacock Ridge Merlot, $15, which packs such punch that “a lot of people will be seduced by it.” Some disappointment in the next selection, a 2005 Seidelberg Pinotage Roland’s Reserve, $19, drowned out by oak — a pass. And last but not least, a 2004 Rustenberg John X Merriman, a bit pricier at $24, but it offers “an explosion” of garden tastes … “a vegetable bomb” that’s “stupid close to being tremendous” save for an awkward finish, though still an “absolute buy.”

A great way to learn about wines is to watch an expert taste, rate and describe them. Selections are picked because the topic is timely or seems particularly interesting. Each week a new clip, via Viddler, WNR’s player of choice because it lets you add your own comments.
